Channel Bonding 101

Channel Bonding Merges Your Internet Connections to Give You Faster and More Reliable Internet

What is Channel Bonding?

Channel bonding technology lets users combine two or more active Internet connections, taking advantage of their combined speed. This technology is often implemented to offer increased reliability with the power to seamlessly divert traffic to a secondary connection if the primary Internet becomes unavailable. Up until now, channel bonding technology has been the domain of IT professionals, but with apps like Speedify that are made for the average person, anyone can unleash the power of multiple connections at the click-of-a-button.

Channel Bonding Basics

In order to understand how channel bonding works, first you need to understand the basics of how data travels between your computer and the Internet. The tl;dr here is that your Internet traffic is made up of sockets and packets. You can think of sockets as tubes of information between you and the Internet. When you open any given web page, for example, your browser will open several sockets: one to download images, another to grab the text, and so on. The actual data that makes up these images and text are called packets. These packets travel across your open sockets to load your requested web page from the Internet.

How Does Channel Bonding Work?

Channel bonding makes it possible to spread individual packets amongst multiple Internet connections. With a channel bonding solution like Speedify, you can connect your computer to any combination of WiFi, 3G/4G, and wired Internet connections, enjoying their combined speed and increased reliability. How does this work? All those various packets of data are intelligently distributed across your various Internet connections giving you their combined speed. By splitting all your web traffic at the packet-level, even large single socket transfers such as VPNs, streaming movies, and uploading and downloading files can be given a major speed boost.

This is accomplished by first establishing a connection to a Speed Server in the cloud. The Speedify client software then works in tandem with the Speed Server to intelligently divide traffic and deliver the combined speed of all your available Internet connections.

Channel bonding also offers robust failover capabilities, so even if you unplug one of your Internet connections during an important upload or download your transfer will keep on transferring!
